Wild Drinks: Oxymels, Shrubs And Switchels
with Emily Han
Monday, July 25, 6:30-8:30PM
Homestead Apothecary, 486 49th Street,  #C, Oakland, 510-495-6549

Vinegar is one of the oldest liquids used to preserve and extract herbs and fruits. As demonstrated by the long history of drinking vinegars, this form of medicine can be delicious, too! In this class we’ll travel from Ancient Greece and Persia to Colonial America, the Caribbean, and the modern-day apothecary and cocktail bar, exploring drinking vinegars like oxymels, shrubs, and switchels.

Through hands-on activities, demonstrations, and tastings, we’ll delve into the medicinal properties of vinegar; how to make several kinds of drinking vinegars; when to use them based on herbal energetics and actions; and how to mix a fabulous cocktail or mocktail. You’ll craft your own shrub and oxymel to take home along with the inspiration and confidence to get creative with your own concoctions.

Followed by a book signing. Books will be available for sale, or you’re welcome to bring your own copies to be signed.
