In this class you will learn the basic stitches of Hungarian written embroidery, a folk style that originated in Transylvania in the late 18th Century. Fun for beginners and experienced embroiderers, you’ll stitch a heart or tulip design on a linen drawstring bag, great for storing odds and ends. You’ll also take home materials to create another piece as well as resources on Hungarian embroidery and patterns. Instructor Sarah Pedlow will share her knowledge of the culture and history of Transylvanian textiles and her travel experience in Hungary and Romania.

Sarah Pedlow is the owner and designer of ThreadWritten Textiles, accessories with Hungarian embroidery from Transylvania, Romania. Since 2012, she has been working with ethnic Hungarian women in Romania who still practice traditional “written” embroidery to create handbags and home decor. She has given lectures for the Embroiderer’s Guild of America and holds an MFA in Visual Arts.
