Replace your Front Lawn
with Kim Raftery
Saturday, July 25, 9:30-11:30AM
Gamble Garden, 1431 Waverley Street, Palo Alto

Back by popular demand, this is our fifth offering of this class! Learn how to replace or shrink your front lawn with a beautiful, inviting garden of flowering and edible plants that provide seasonal interest as well as drought tolerance. Kim will discuss alternatives to having a conventional lawn in your front yard, including ways to remove a lawn that has invasive weeds growing in it, how to layout your new front yard garden with paths, low fences, planting beds, “no mow” meadows, boulders, seating areas, lighting, and water features. She will briefly explain the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s landscape rebate program, which gives funds to participants who remove at least 100 square feet of turf grass and replace it with drought tolerant plants and efficient irrigation in the converted area.

Note: After Kim’s talk, there will be an optional tour of two gardens that Kim designed.

Kim Raftery has been designing gardens for 18 years and has her own business, Raftery Garden Design. She has a degree from Stanford University in Fine Arts. Kim designed a garden that was on the 2010 Gamble Garden Spring Tour. Kim designs gardens with her husband, Kevin: They have 60 years of combined experience working in garden design and maintenance. They emphasize sustainable garden practices whenever possible by recommending organic fertilizers, organic pest and disease management, efficient irrigation practices, and drought tolerant plants.
