This class is for homeowners who desire a new landscape that is beautiful, functional, and produces food and medicine for you and your family. We will discuss how to design and build a garden that is custom tailored to your needs, and the health of you and your family.

This class is unique in its combination of Ayurveda and food forests, and will help you select the best plants and overall design features that will aid the health of your family, and the ecology of the land. The foundational ideas of Ayurveda and food forests are ancient, and we will also explore the basics of those practices as they relate to designing a healing garden in our unique climates of the Bay Area.

This class will also have a hands-on section where students will work on creating a custom landscape design for their home.  Students are encouraged to bring a site map of their property to the class to use for design work.

Materials, including paper and pencils for landscape designs, will be included in the class fees.  Students will also have the option to purchase a first edition printing of my new book titled Ayurvedic Food Forests, How To Design And Build An Edible And Healing Garden In The SF Bay Area.

Leith Carstarphen:
I am particularly passionate about this topic because of my upbringing with organic gardening and a deep reverence for nature I experienced as a child. My passion for ecological and human health has continually grown to include studies of permaculture and Ayurveda, which have been incredible forces in my life for integrating a deep understanding of the connection between ecosystem and human health. I have worked in the field of ecological landscape design and construction for over 18 years, and have been studying and working with ayurveda for the last 6 years.  I hold degrees in Landscape Architecture, a Landscape Contractor’s license, a certificate in Clinical Ayurveda, and a Massage Therapist’s license.
