Summer Solstice show - the shortest, hottest night of 2015!
with Inspector Gadje Balkan Brass, Jill Parker & The Foxglove Sweethearts, & DJ Željko
For eight years Serbian DJ Željko has produced Kafana Balkan, a seasonal party that SF Weekly called, the "Best Crazed... Brass Band Dance Party in SF." For the Eastern European communities that come out, it’s a little bit of home, and for everyone else it’s one of the Bay’s best parties. Sold out shows, sweat soaked dancers, home-made gibanica and burek (savory Balkan pastries), bumpin’ Balkan DJ sets, bellydance, and brass bands playing through the crowds and onto the stage… Don't miss one of the city’s absolute best parties!
Inspector Gadje brings a big and beautiful take on the bumpin’ brass band music of the Balkans, inciting joy & dance from the first downbeat. Their name, a double entendre, references their cultural place and efforts to break “Gypsy” stereotypes. For this show, Inspector Gadje amplifies their instrumental core through collaboration with five stellar guest vocalists: Radka Varimezova (Bulgaria, of the renowned Varimezova musical family), Dušan Ristić (Serbia - director of Amala Romani music and language school), a surprise guest hailing from the highlands of Ethiopia, plus MC Rai (Tunisia - Arabic Urban Rai Fusion) and Kata Miletich (Spain/US - from Bay Area favorite Locura).
Jill Parker (Mamma of the modern tribal fusion bellydance movement) and top notch tribal fusion bellydancers Foxglove Sweethearts will grace the stage between musical sets. The group embraces traditional and modern bellydance techniques through imaginative and narrative choreography.
