A day-long retreat at the EarthRise Center Labyrinth honoring the work of Anna Halprin on her 95th birthday.

"I believe if more of us could contact the natural world in a directly experiential way, this would alter the way we treat our environment, ourselves, and one another.” - Anna Halprin

Borrowing from traditional cultures where dance rituals are an important part of a community’s well being, Anna Halprin was one of the first Western dancers to apply dance to emotional and physical healing, and to personal and social transformation.

The recipient of numerous awards and honors, she changed the landscape of modern dance by taking it off the stage and out into the natural world, to remind people of their intrinsic need to be connected to our environment, and to a community.

Anna teaches that the body is our instrument - that we have to tune it and listen to what it is telling us about our lives. She developed a method for warming up the body and awakening the senses, which she calls Movement Ritual. It is intended as a form of meditation, a way to build a strong and flexible body, and a catalyst for getting in touch with the emotions and narrative associated with the body.

Inspired by our studies with Anna and the Tamalpa Institute, we will integrate elements from Movement Ritual into our day of labyrinth activities. The labyrinth, with its invitation to slow down and drop into a meditative state, will be used as a kind of studio space where participants can tap into the wisdom of the body and explore their personal story in relationship to the natural world and to others. We will use the symbolic language of the arts to record and express our discoveries.

After a morning of Expressive Arts activities, we will break for a delicious vegetarian lunch at the beautiful EarthRise dining room, then finish with more Anna-inspired creative activities in the afternoon.

No previous movement or art experience is required. Art materials will be supplied.
