As Memorial Day approaches the Imaginists will host a three weekend run of Tea, an internationally recognized performance and discussion that opens space for diverse groups to engage with difficult subjects such as war, detention, dehumanization, and love. The stories within the performance traverse a variety of landscapes from the tea served in the Iraqi countryside, to a cage in Guantanamo Bay, to a family gathering here in Santa Rosa; tea is not only a favored drink but a shared moment that transcends cultural divides and systems of oppression.

Aaron Hughes, an Iraq War veteran and the artist behind Tea, says, “When someone sits, sips, and reflects over a cup of tea there is space to ask questions about one’s relationship to the world: a world that’s filled with dehumanization, war, and destruction; a world that’s filled with moments of beauty, love, and humanity.”

Imaginists Artistic Director Amy Pinto says, “Over tea, brewed in the Iraqi tradition, we get to talk about uncomfortable subjects. We get to sit in the silences and call up our own memories and stories that connect us to war, oppression, and racism and, in doing so, we resist our collective amnesia and regain our common history."

Hughes welcomes all saying, “Please come and sit, reflect, share, and sip tea with me.”
