Mushroom Cultivation Workshop
with David Cody
Sunday, April 26, 10:00AM-12:00PM
private homestead, 176 Marlow Drive, Oakland

Learn to grow three types of edible mushrooms, build your own mushroom farm on-site and take it home! The permaculture master David Cody will cover the basics of mushroom requirements, several easy ways to create your own mini-mushroom farms and explain some of the mystery of the incredible world of fungi. You’ll go home with two mushroom growing setups (an inoculated log and inoculated mulch) plus the knowledge to take your edible hobby further!

Always wanted to grow your own fungi but didn’t know how to do it? We’ve done the hard work for you by sourcing freshly (but not too freshly) cut hardwood logs and mushroom plugs. We’ll learn together then build together, drilling holes and inserting plugs in this hands-on class outdoors class. We’ll create mushroom-growing logs with shiitake and oyster mushrooms as well and mulch gardens growing Garden Giant (King Stropharia). You’ll take home an inoculated log plus mulch inoculated with King Stropharia spores to start your own mushroom garden.

Once you’ve seen the wonders of fungi, you’ll never go back!

Supplies Required: None required.

Limit: 20 people

Location: This class is held in a suburban homestead at 176 Marlow Drive in Oakland near the Dutton exit of 580. It’s about 2 miles from BART on flat ground and ample street parking is also available. A cab ride from BART is normally about $10 and we don’t make promises but if you’re friendly you can usually convince someone to drop you off after class.

David Cody helped form the San Francisco Permaculture Guild and currently serves on the Wisdom Council. In 2008 he and Kevin Bayuk founded the Urban Permaculture Institute of San Francisco and have now trained over 300 people in San Francisco, many of whom are living in the city and working on amazing projects. Along with the formation of UPISF, He was a founding member, lead designer and long time steward of the 18th & Rhode Island Garden in the Potrero Hill neighborhood of San Francisco.
