Do we hunt and gather at garage sales, forage at farmers’ markets? Do we love having a barbeque because it resembles our ancient clan circle? Is reading facial expressions a survival skill learned in infancy? Are children more apt to be abused by stepparents than biological ones? Is teen acting out less common if there are rites of passage?
These are some of the intriguing themes from evolutionary psychology. This program explores the mounting evidence that our body and psyche retain propensities from our paleolithic heritage, survival strategies that might be helpful at this time of global crisis. Taking a non-Darwinian approach, we will consider the emergence of species consciousness as a leading edge of evolution, replacing the genetic imperative to reproduce.
