This month’s tasting will focus on tea as seen through the lens of classical Chinese culture.  We will discuss tea as part of the traditional herbal pharmacopeia, as a means of self-cultivation, and as a symbol or metaphor expressing the most characteristic themes of Chinese art and philosophy.  Central to the “way of tea” are the concepts of Tao, Yin/Yang, the Four Seasons/Five Elements, and the taste/temperature categories of traditional Chinese medicine. A basic grasp of these terms can help us understand the role and meaning of tea in Chinese culture, and sharpen our own experience as well.  To coincide with the qi of the spring, this month’s tasting will focus on floral blends (jasmine, rose and chrysanthemum blossoms), paired with both light and dark teas.
