Love, Justice, and Laughter! An Evening of Musical Wit and Wisdom
with Betsy Rose and Judy Fjell
Sunday, March 15, 7:30PM
Avanova, 417 Avon Street, Oakland
$12- $20 sliding scale

Please join us on Sunday, March 15 when Avonova presents Betsy Rose and Judy Fjell in concert.  Two long-time friends and inspiring singer/songwriters reflect on the seasons of their lives, the losses and gains, the wisdom and the foolish faith that keeps them singing and shaking things up.

Betsy Rose is a singer-songwriter, a community song leader/activist, and a pioneering voice in the Women’s Cultural Movement of the 70s and 80s. Her songs have been sung or recorded by Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Meg Christian and Cris Williamson, and Bobbi McFerrin, as well as women’s choirs and choruses.  After September 11, 2001, Betsy created Singing For Peace, groups of non-professional singers gathering in public to sing songs of healing and peace. Currently she is part of Occupella, songleaders and singers who convene public song “actions” in support of the 99% and Black Lives Matter. For 12 years she led  Womansong Circles, participatory singing groups for women, in the Bay Area and nationally.

Rose’s numerous recordings include  In My Two Hands, songs inspired by the teachings and poetry of Buddhist and Peace Acitvist Thich Nhat Hanh, Welcome To The Circle, a selection of songs from her monthly Womansong Circles and Long For This World, Songs of Loss, Comfort and Remembrance .

Singer-Songwriter Judy Fjell has been entertaining folks since she first picked up a garage sale guitar as a teenager in her home state of Montana. Inspired by such great folk heroes as Pete Seeger, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Malvina Reynolds, Judy also took up the pen and now has over 200 songs and 20 albums to her credit. She has performed at countless festivals, rallies, campuses, concerts, churches, and coffeehouses over the past 40 years. While living in northern California, she directed many women’s choruses and events. She currently directs the much-loved Women Making Music weekend retreats at the Bishop’s Ranch near Healdsburg and the Helena Women’s Chorus and Summersing Camp in Montana. She and Betsy Rose have collaborated many times over the years and they are looking forward to another evening together at Avonova.
