Exploratorium After Dark: Nocturnal
Thursday, February 5, 6:00-10:00PM
Exploratorium, Pier 15, San Francisco
Join us to explore the night - see and better understand what lurks there in the dark.
Matthew Walker will share remarkable new discoveries about the third of our lives we spend asleep. The Sidewalk Astronomers will give us a peek into the night sky. And Anna Franckowiak will talk about the search for the ghostly neutrino particles at the South Pole.
Ryosuke Motani will reveal how tens of millions of years after dinosaurs became extinct, he and Lars Schmitz figured out which were nocturnal. Alex Levy and Epilogue Media invite you to experience the Tactile Dome through a Sound-Tacular nighttime soundscape. And a group of neuroscientists, game designers, educators, and artists will equip you to control your brain when you’re on the edge of sleep.
Pianists Sarah Cahill, Jerry Kuderna, and San Francisco Conservatory students will perform music inspired by the night, and you can go on a moonlight safari with Bonnie Cromwell to meet four (mostly) nocturnal wild creatures. Explorables will teach you how to make a stardial. With our Explainers you’ll learn about lunar rainbows, why animals’ eyes glow, and why pirates wear eye patches - not to mention which plankton species are active at night, what your heat signature and dilated pupils look like, and what a nocturnal monochromat sees.
Watch Sam Easterson’s short film Burrow-Cams to venture into the underground homes of creatures such as the burrowing owl and swift fox.
Buying tickets in advance is strongly recommended; door sales are limited. Tickets for limited-capacity programs will be made available to visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.
Experience life After Dark, an evening series exclusively for adults that mixes cocktails, conversation, and playful, innovative science and art events.
Not a theater, cabaret, or gallery, After Dark contains aspects of all three. Each evening showcases a different topic - from music to sex to electricity - but all include a cash bar and film screenings, plus an opportunity to play with our hundreds of hands-on exhibits. Join us and mingle with inventive scientists, artists, musicians, programmers, and designers. Enjoy live performances, provocative films, interesting music, cutting-edge technology, unexpected extravaganzas, and more, depending on each evening's lineup. And all night long, delicious nibbles and outrageous bay views are available at the SeaGlass restaurant. Leave the kids at home and meet friends or take a date. Where else can you find an intellectually stimulating playground for adults?
