Koliada: Winter Music from the Carpathians
with Virlana Tkacz and traditional Hutsul Musicians from Ukraine
Thursday, December 10, 7:30-9:00PM
Silk Road House, 1944 University Avenue, Berkeley
Suggested donation: $10-$20

Virlana Tkacz, director of the Yara Arts Group, offers a multimedia presentation offering insight into the rituals surrounding Koliada, a Winter Solstice ritual that now coincides with Christmas but is much older in origin and symbolism.

Making a rare, first-time visit to the Bay Area, the singers and musicians of the Koliadnyky are from Kryvorivnia, a Ukrainian village in the Hutsul region of the Carpathian Mountains. The Hutsul Koliadnyky (carolers) are pastoral highlanders who perform Winter Solstice and Christmas songs. In an annual ritual, the musicians spend twelve days in the deep snows of January delivering messages of joy, encouragement, and gratitude to their community. The music is connected to ancestry, and is believed to harness powers from the supernatural realm.

Co-hosted by Silk Road House and the UC Berkeley Department of Music.
